Tobias,

I think I have a good solution for the images problem that will allow 
translated wikis to be kept at blender.org without alot of problems.

Instead of versioning the images by release, version the images by 
language.  ie, if there's someScreenshot.jpg in the manual, the german 
team could copy it as someScreenshot.de.jpg and update it at their 
leisure.  The Spanish team would have someScreenshot.es.jpg, the italian 
team would have someScreenshot.it.jpg, etc.
