Yah the situation happens when you need the mapping to be stick to
original unsubsurfed mesh to keep things where they need to be.
Example this simple shape with an outline in the color map and then
subsurfed

Subsurf UVs ON = incorrect edges

Subsurf UVs OFF = correct edges
http://zanqdo.com/tmp/SubsurfUV_OFF.png

In less extreme cases this same problem shows up as mapping errors on
the corners (little triangles)
