And what about key bindings? Oh, let me guess, now it will require
many clicks and keys will be mostly useless.

For reference, I checked some tutorials, Maya layers look a lot like
Blender groups at first glance, LW had other limitations and things
that will never apply (control to hide in Layout? Blender is not split
like LW). In few words, there is no 1:1 mapping, and there will never
be if Blender has to be Blender and not a crap copy of some other app,
or worst a crap remix of different apps. I have not seen any serious
Blender focused proposal, just a "copy copy copy" and "you are so past
century". Not even depth reviews of the other apps, I had to look them
up and figure from the limited info provided in training docs (which
lack such info as how tiresome things can be, or what tricks people
use... basically the insight experience gives).

Maybe people should stop the obession of "layer must be like" and "I
need N layers" and think about alternatives, maybe the capabilities
are there or adaptable (make outliner allow render toggle of a full
group would be a step towards more control, eg). In depth revision,
internal consistency, those are interesting projects; copying is just
best way to end worse than before.

First think what is needed at the global level, then think how to
apply at all the lower levels, never retrofit someone's else
solutions. Also stop the obsession with names, seriously, the names in
this field are not law, but seem to easly blind people.
