the more recent version of gforge has subversion integration, just not
the version we have installed currently.

Nothing special about CVS, just that SVN was quite new at the time the
site was setup.  We have looked into migrating to SVN, it is something
that is generally agreed to be a good idea and Ton made a brief
mention about it a couple of meetings back.  Project Orange used SVN
for management of the Orange assets so they are familiar with its
advantages.
