Hi Patrick,

I have seen a constant interest in the use of vectorial images as
textures in Blender, and that is definitely a noteworthy topic to
discuss. AFAIK there are a few projects trying to bring SVG support in
the Blender texture system. One is Vectex, an SVG vector texture plugin
for Blender:

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?117889-Vectex-SVG-vector-texture-plugin-for-Blender

Another project is of Vectex integration into Blender:

http://render360sideb.seesaa.net/category/7374938-1.html (in Japanese)

I am afraid that both projects are inactive, so some development is
needed to bring them up to date.

Regards,
