The description could say:
"Fit resolution relative to sensor dimensions"
Auto - "Old-style Blender" (??)
Horizontal - "Fit resolution horizontally"
Vertical - "Fit resolution vertically"

Well if you force a certain aspect of landscape to fit vertically or
portrait to fit horizontally, the resolution will extend beyond the
sensor, and that is fine. Primarily though for landscape you keep it
on Auto/Horizontal and for portrait you change to Vertical, for the
resolution to fit inside the sensor. As you can see, the Sensor
display option doesn't represent Vertical at all.
