Hi Michael,
Nice meeting everyone interested in the Usd development for Blender.

I'll give a brief overview of where we are now and heading towards:
Our WIP hydra/cycles render delegate was released recently and has most information here:
https://github.com/tangent-opensource/hdcycles

We do have more export functionality and a (somewhat) working importer. Our intentions and feature set are documented here:
https://github.com/tangent-opensource/blender/wiki
The code will follow shortly (it took us a while to get the process setup correctly)

It is worth mentioning that the importer might not be considered to be brought back to blender, based on an earlier discussion:
https://devtalk.blender.org/t/2020-06-05-tangent-animation-labs-blender-universal-scene-description/13661

The other development is the usd type that can reference and show usd via the viewport etc.
We're in the progress to developing it as Usd Object - very similar in goals to the well-known (originally) AL usdmaya plugin.

We plan to get this WIP development out as well - but it does not match the design described in the collections and is rather based on
our production use cases.

It is worth mentioning that our intention is not to hold back or work against the open source process -
we're just constrained by our production dates and need to develop regardless of these discussions, plans and eventual work.

But we hope that the access to our work and plans will help and influence the development of what might become a more generic usd collection functionality.

Cheers,

Subject: [Bf-usd] state of development

Hello Dalai, Brecht and everyone,

Thank you very much for facilitating this forum for discussion. We at NVIDIA are very excited to join this group and work with everyone to help complete the USD integration effort in Blender!

We have been familiarizing ourselves the Blender code base and the current implementation of the USD exporter. We have also read Brecht's design document regarding collections and have been following the ensuing discussion with much interest. We will provide feedback to the design proposals in an email to follow.

We are familiar with the USD exporter functionality in the master branch and have read through the related blogs and task descriptions. However, It would be helpful for us to have a high level snapshot of the current state of USD development in Blender. Specifically,

  * In addition to Sybren, Brian Savery and Blazey Floch, who are the developers working on USD support in Blender?
  * Which features of the USD exporter / importer are currently under development? Blazey mentioned that Tangent will publish updates to the exporter / importer code soon. Will these changes eventually be merged with the official Blender?
  * In addition to the work on collections, have the goals or timeline for the remaining exporter / importer feature extensions been defined yet?

Thank you.

Michael Kowalski
