   I'm all for this.  But failing this, I'd at least like to have
"insert available" as the default behavior for when the user does turn
autokey on.

   Also, since everything is animatable now, I think it makes sense
for autokey to affect changing settings as well (like material color).
 And "key available" is the only way to do this sanely, since people
don't usually intend to animate settings.

   Agreed on graph and dopesheet.
   But the NLA editor is a global animation mixing tool, and IMO
shouldn't change it's display based on selection anymore than the
sequence editor should.  At least not by default.
