Thanks for picking up on that- looks like a bug in Blender.Mesh, 
submited a report

as for using your script/using the one I wrote, Im not fussed- if you 
want to impliment the same functionality in your script. go ahead and we 
can use it instead of apply_def.py
Sure the bugs are trivial- The issue is that if Blenders release with 
thiese bugs they are NOT trivial because people will be using buggy 
scripts. - I wasnt sure you were available to fix this before release, 
if you are let be know and well try to get this into the release and 
remove apply_def.
