Sorry, I forgot to reply to this together with my reply to you from a 
few days ago.

 From what I remember this is trivial to add, the problem is that event 
code is always about to be completely rewritten or something (and with 
vert/edge/face modes now in, guess configurable shortcuts is 
the-next-big-thing-to-make-Blender-a-killer-app for Maya / 3ds lovers 
out there, as people say :).

So it can be done, but we have to discuss first at bf-committers and an 
irc meeting and then make it clear to users that it'd be a part of the 
API that could change at anytime, since buttons are added / changed 
(possibly even removed) frequently and an overwrite could result in deep 
changes.  The selling point could be that, with all events added, people 
can write automated UI tests for Blender.
