The Depth Buffer is a function for rendering like the "Limited
Selection" in "Edit Mode" or what Monkeyboy describes as 'Hidden Line':

Don't know if it is really usefull (and could be found and understand
from the user) put this to render settings.
But it is a detail, it is time for a good wire rendering solution. The
option to put spheres or cubes to crossings and endings could be very
usefull for scientific visualisation too (may rendering chemic
structures etc.).
