If I run this contest, I will stick around. I have been here for a
long time and will not be leaving any time soon short of death or
illness.

I don't agree. Who is not very important to me, as a hobbyist. Sure
bragging rights make us look good and that is nice but the last poll I
saw said that blender users were mostly hobbyist. New users don't tend
to know who's who in the pros and don't care much. It is also not
relevant to me when I view the gallery. I think it is in the top
interest of Blender.org to have the very best images and videos in the
gallery. I think it is important for Blender.org to support pushing
the edges of Blender use and a good contest can do this. The only
other contest I know of is Andrew Price's and he does not direct that
contest at new blender features as I proposed. He is helping his
students, as he should.

No one has more prestige or is more important to Blender users than
Blender.org. I think a contest here will attract the most attention
possible and bring in the best images. It also would allow Blender.org
to support a great building of CC licenced artwork and, .blend files.
