We'd ideally like something more like 2700x3600 image size, which would 
accomdate full-page images at 300dpi (this includes A4 and 8.5x11" 
American sizes, plus bleeds). 600 and 1200 dpi are needed for scanning 
to get the most detail, but offset printers will only use 300dpi at 
most, and would downscan a 600 or 1200 dpi image. This would roughly be 
equivalent to Stefano's numbers below, maybe a little more or less.

Of course, I'm thinking these would be the "originals" size, and all of 
the other images would be generated down from there, including FPOs for 
the actual designs of everything. The only time we'd need to access 
these large files is at press time, when the finished product gets sent 
to the printers. Unless you really want to make *all* files available 
for download to everyone at all times. In which case those issues of 
space and bandwidth would have to be worked out.
