On this page there is a nice explanation why scaling images
(i.e. screenshots) is often a bad idea...

I can't see any reason why the PDF gets that big in size, but I hope
there will be some other solution than making the images really
small...

This is true for Gif/Png, but jpeg would not have the same problem, 
in fact JPEG would do badly with content that contains areas of the same
color, 
take a gif of bugs bunny and compress it with jpeg, the resulting file
size will be bigger than the gif file, same is true for gifing photos.  

If we can put vector diagrams in the book, in theory the images could be
any 
size. It would be neat if blender could generate a vector image of its
screen, 
then we could really comrpess those images down..
