You're getting some negative responses to the proposed BGE changes on the
blenderartists forums, including several suggestions of forking the project:

http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?297037-Project-GameBlender-a-radical-solution-involving-the-BGE-as-an-independent-project
http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?297023-Future-of-the-BGE

I personally think the proposed BGE changes could be interesting as long as
three things happen:
1. We don't lose existing BGE features
2. We don't lose the ability to publish BGE games
3. We don't lose a focus on performance for BGE games

A tighter integration of the BGE and the rest of Blender could be very
beneficial to the BGE with its limited development resources, but many
people fear losing the engine they have invested time into learning or
developing. Furthermore, I would like to point out that the BGE is at least
on par with the free version of Unity feature wise.

Regards,
Daniel Stokes
