LarstiQ gave me these instructions to simplify the OpenAL link with debian:

* wget http: //richtlijn.be/~larstiq/openal/ smaller.diff
* apt-get install build-essential devscripts;
* apt-get install fakeroot debhelper texinfo
* apt-get source openal;
* apply smaller.diff patch
* cd openal-0.something;
* debuild;
* debi;

Then build and you're ready to go.  I used libopenal.a instead of the 
.so lib.
