Toni,

have you looked at shed skin ?

http://sourceforge.net/projects/shedskin/

 It is a python to C++ compiler, the author states it gives 10-100
fold speed ups (unoptimized), also PyPy once optimized could possibly
give c-ish speed.  I think it quite possible that python could end up
long term giving us equivalent or superior speed in many cases. 
However something that does interest/concern me is memory size.
