You're right. I could have sworn (sweared? swearen?) that you were wrong until
I just tried it myself.

The thing is: The material of a particle system *is* evaluated like you
describe it should. BUT the material of a dupliverted CUBE to a particle
system is NOT (like joeddh pointed out).

So yes, I'm with you there.

Strangely, I seem to remember some commit from Ton not too long ago that
solved exactly this. Oh well.
