I think the general target for all things Blender is that we do assume 
people are using hardware accelerated OpenGL, especially since Blender 
makes such heavy use of it. Trying to do anything productive in 3D with 
a software OpenGL renderer would be a bit of an exercise in frustration 
- I think it's more than fair to restrict our target market to people 
sufficiently serious about 3D to own 3D accelerated hardware.
