Thank you, I didn't know about the MMB tricks! (I already mentioned the 
other things in my post). However, I still think it's not very easy to 
do it this way. The viewport navigation beats this method by far IMHO, 
because you don't really have to switch to different modes:

In the viewport the only key I use is the SHIFT key (for panning), which 
is easily accessable. MMB for rotating and scrollwheel for dollying. I'm 
not sure how this works with mac (2 button mouse, right?), because I 
haven't got a mac.
