Summary: integrated uv unwrapper
Initial Comment:
It would be nice if Blender had the tools to unwrap a
mesh and generate a flattened 2d version that retains
the uv information for export to an image editor.

Yes that would be great!
Is it possible to be developed from the save vertices groups function?

In face mode, press U, then select an unwrap mode. Goto the UV image editor screen, then do a print screen with all the faces selected (faces selected in the 3D window will display their corrosponding UV coords in the image editor). Open the screenshot in a program that supports layers, like the Gimp, or Photoshop.
Also, if you literally want a shaded, unwrapped mesh, I bdlieve their are several python scripts that will do this. Try searching around on Elysiun.

This function is awesome i know something about that.
But the displacement of the mesh (at the texture window) shows just one " side " of the mesh and the cilindrical one is very limited.
So we need to select faces from diferent sides to obtain a
correct display when the texture (created whith gimp for example) is loaded. Whithout a true
unwraper this task is very frustrating: just one click in the wrong place and all the selectios done before gets lost.
