may be it is not obvious enough,
but you can change the center of projection to the 3d cursor in the=20
header of 3d view already, the combo left of the layer buttons (like=20
you would do for scaling,rotating ... ).

And, aligning the orientation works just the other way round ( "from=20
window to .." indicates this, text was omitted in tuhopuu since this=20
is default and would not fit the buttons):=20
rotate the 3D view in "UV face select" mode until either you are=20
looking throug the the leg (VATop , (VA =3D view aligns)) then the PZX/=20
PZY (PZ =3Dprojection (z)center) buttons select the orientation of the=20
split or "topdown axis" is parallel to the leg (VAFace, split will be=20
on opposite)=20

Suggested workflow (should work with bf-blender too with the "from=20
window to .." mappings but setting the radius there sucks):
set center to 3d-cursor
switch to "UV face select"=20
TAB to "edit" mode and select vertex group TAB back
align the 3d view to match the above conditions
repeat {shoot "cylinder/sphere" calculation, adjust 3d-cursor,=20
orientation and radius} until "nice mapping" =20
