Summary: better i/o formats support

Initial Comment:
How about taking advantage of libs like gstreamer,
where available, so that more image/video files can
loaded and saved?  It would be great to load divx
textures directly, or generate divx films directly. 
Using libs like gstreamer would give support for lots
of formats with the minimum of extra work.
