I'm planning to move websites. The SPE website at pycs.net will be transferred to my zettai zope website and the blender website to sourceforge to give it more visibility. Are there any people with zope experience who could assist? Also I would like to start a cvs or subversion to make collaboration more possible. What is recommended. I have no experience with both of them and I would prefer something rather simple to maintain. Also what is recommended software for this on windows. Is there a simple way to create shortcuts on the desktop and start menu similar to windows? I hope there are still some committed spe users out there. Also I would like to create different mailing lists to seperate between users&documentation and development. Please react, Stani __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Hi Stani, I would *strongly* recommend Subversion over CVS. It just has some much needed features. RapidSVN is a good gui subversion client available on both Windows and Linux, and makes Subversion very easy to use. If possible, try and find a host that already has Subversion installed. Glad to hear. > Is there a simple way to create shortcuts on the > desktop and start menu similar to windows? If you're asking how to install menu shortcuts in a Linux gui, then you should see the Freedesktop menu specification (http://freedesktop.org/Standards/menu-spec). It defines a standard method for describing a "start" menu on Linux, and I believe it's currently used by both KDE and Gnome. Basically, you'd have to write a simple xml formatted file with a .desktop extension, declaring the executable's location, position in the menu, icon to use, etc. You'd then copy this file to $XDG_DATA_DIRS/applications/ (/usr/share/applications/ on Fedora). The link to SPE should then automatically in appear in the menu. I asked for an account on berlios to put up there a svn (as appearantly its everybodies favorite, rather than cvs). http://developer.berlios.de/forum/forum.php?forum_id=4718 I hope it will ease the collaboration on SPE. I'll se tortoisesvn (but windows only), as appearantly it's more mature than rapidsvn. Concerning shortcuts, I'm developping my own wizard, to make the installation of SPE more user friendly (for newbies) and to be able to optionally install the plugins like wxGlade, pychecker, ... Also this wizard will be probably a generic wxPython class for distributing wxPython programs. It shouldn't take long to finish. As wxPython is a requirement for SPE anyway, it's more nice to use a more gui powered installer. I'll take care of the windows shortcuts, but would like some Linux people to implement the Linux side, as it is hard to implement something for a platform that I'm not using. Please let me know if you are interested to test the installer. Windows users are also welcome, just to be sure. Concerning Zope I would like to know what would be the best newsblog zope product, something like pycs was. Maybe Squishdot? I want that it supports RSS and comments. Also the look should be customizable. Any ideas? References can be the www.blender.org website, Maybe I make a similar announcement on python-list at python.org but than I would like it to be a bit further to be more specific. Reactions are always welcome. Bye for now, Stani ____________________________________________________ Yahoo! Sports Rekindle the Rivalries. Yes, TortoiseSVN is more mature, but I've found the latest release of RapidSVN to be quite stable. TortoiseSVN is integrated into Windows Explorer, which some clearly like, but I personally disliked intensely. I found that right clicking on a file that had nothing to do with subversion was much slower, since Tortoise was still checking things. You can quite happily install both at the same time, and decide which works better for you. I believe this issue has been addressed in Tortoise's help docs. Basically, you can limit the browser's SVN options to only the directories containing SVNed files. Some parts of SPE were rewritten to make it (more) stable for wxPython 2.6 (probably also for 2.5). In the near future SPE (but not next release) will support remote debugging thanks to the excellent work of Nir Aides (author of rpdb). SPE is looking for following volunteers (especially for linux and mac os x): - :Packagers: SPE is urgently looking for packagers for all Linux version and OS X. Your support will be appreciated by a lot of users. Also you will be mentioned in the SPE website&documentation (unless you don't want of course). - :Beta-testers: If you would like to be a beta-tester please send an email to me (s_t_a_n_i$yahoo.com), describing your python & OS configuration. - :Developpers: SPE will use SVN for collaborative development. If you are experienced with wxPython, please join. Also somebody to help to setup the SVN would be nice. - :Documentation: The documentation of SPE could be far more complete with contributions from users. It is now written in OpenOffice 1.9+ to generate pdf and html. SPE documentation is looking for contributors, translators and coordinators. Also native English speaking people are needed to correct mistakes. The more I used it, the more I loved it. I even made a small donation (the only open source program I ever contributed to financially). About three months ago, I upgraded wxPython (from 2.3.5 I believe) to 2.4, spe stopped working, and I had to use something else. (I currently use Komodo.) With the recent announcements, I gave it a try again. After making a few mistakes (like simply removing the _spe and sm directories rather than doing an "uninstall" from the control panel), I finally got spe to start. I use: Python 2.4.1 wxPython 2.6.1.0 unicode spe 0.7.4.e (title bar says 0.7.4.a) on Windows XP (The new version is not "installed" anymore...) When I try to open a python file, nothing seems to happen, and here is what I get as an error message: Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Menu.py", line 208, in menu_open_files self.parentPanel.open(event) File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Parent.py", line 227, in open child.frame.onFrameClose() File "C:\Python24\lib\site-packages\sm\wxp\smdi.py", line 672, in onFrameClose self.dead = Framework.onFrameClose(self,destroy=0) File "C:\Python24\lib\site-packages\sm\wxp\smdi.py", line 319, in onFrameClose self.dead = self.panel.onClose() File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Child.py", line 397, in onClose if len(self.app.children)==1:self.parentPanel.menuBar.enable(0) AttributeError: 'Panel' object has no attribute 'menuBar' ============ If I try to simply save the unnamed file under "test.py", I get the following message ============ Traceback (most recent call last): File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Menu.py", line 212, in menu_save self.app.childActive.save() File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Child.py", line 220, in save self.saveAs() File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Child.py", line 258, in saveAs self.save(paths[0]) File "C:\Python24\Lib\site-packages\_spe\Child.py", line 249, in save self.fileTime=os.path.getmtime(self.fileName) File "C:\Python24\lib\ntpath.py", line 233, in getmtime return os.stat(filename).st_mtime OSError: [Errno 2] No such file or directory: u'C:\\experiment\\test.py' [when that happens, spe won't quit anymore :-(] What puzzles me is that, somehow, spe remembers the directory in which the last file was open (even after I removed the .spe directory in my "document and settings" path). Especially from Apple users. I'm in a constant state of debugging. Bug reports like this are very useful. The first issue is solved in latest release (now is i, might be z when you read this ;-) ) Please keep on testing and describe things in a reconstructable way. Post from now on detailed reports on the bug tracker: https://developer.berlios.de/bugs/?group_id=4161 >From now on follow these steps: - type "python SPE_.py --debug > debug.txt" at the command prompt - publish debug.txt on the bug tracker describing how you did it, so it is reconstructable. Mention the versions of spe, wxpython and python. And of course check if the bug is not reported yet. Thanks, Stani --- Andr? Roberge wrote: > About 10 months ago, I discovered SPE. The second one is still not fixed with version "j" ... but all I have to do (as a work around) is create a named file with some other editor and open it with spe. I have really missed the nice "class browser". :-) Great work! Andr? I guess it is stable enough for official public release. But we never know... Post bug reports on the tracker. I need some Mac people to solve the issue with the notebook: when it is bigger than its parent frame, it is not clipped, but it overlaps which doesn't look or feel nice. Does anyone have ideas? Do we have to use a wxChoicebook or wxListbook instead of notebook on Mac. To make the problem smaller we also could leave out text labels on notebook pages and only show icons (mac only of course). I posted this as a bug in the tracker so please answer this matter there. Hope to get your reactions soon, although in the weekend I won't have much time. Please spam me with bug reports in the tracker ;-) (not on this mailing list) I'll create a special mailing list for mac, as it requires some special attention. Sam Widmer will setup the SVN. I hope SPE gets stable soon, so I can take some time to get to know SVN. Looking at the code it appears that this file may do the same thing, however it needs a package called spit. So my question is 1) what does install.py do? and 2) what is spit and where can I get it.
