[Demoreel] videos

Hi all,

After watching the reel many times at the booth, I have quite some remarks though... I had no time before Siggraph for a fair review, sorry it's too late now. I have great respect for people volunteering to help out on jobs, which makes it difficult to be honest with fair criticism. :)

The reel has many strong clips, but also choices with a confusing messages (tests, turntables, tutorials, work from popular people, etc). It will work well for 'the community' of Blender fans and a non-professional audience, but not for people in the CG industry... for that it has too many sub-standard choices.

The reel probably tries to show an average overview (some turntables, some stills, some ads, some film, some tutorials) but the choices made makes it not very strong - and even uninteresting at times.

Here's some points;

- I wouldn't choose stills in the reel at all. The choice does not invoke interest (Nobody knows it's from an upcoming feature film).

- Did you see that the renders are the only part that really look crisp and HD? The videos compared look a bit fuzzy and overcompressed.

- The blocking in the spaceship turntable is very distracting, the render errors in the turntable dino too, also Alex Penner's video looks quite badly compressed.

- I really miss quality character animation.

- What's the Samsung commercial doing in it...

- A nice spectacular shot is in the end (city scape with alien stuff). That's getting cut before you can see what it is. Why was not more 'film vfx' added?

- The explosion of the church is so-so... I also don't understand the road sign, nor the jellybean. These are not good examples for reels.

- Credits should be put in a small font on every submission as caption in the bottom.

- The blender logo is too large, and used 'off brand' (see logo guidelines). Make a headline using a title (like Blender Showreel 2012) in a nice font, and use a logo small underneath somewhere.

- The font with 'showreel 2012' doesn't fit. The end credit choice of font also looks sloppy. The credit for the editor of the reel is too prominent. The makers of the videos deserve much much more attention.

- An official blender.org film can go to the Blender Foundation youtube channel btw.

I'm sorry to rant on so much, but at siggraph the reel didn't work well. Not many people spent time on watching it entirely (the demoloop attracted more viewers). Of course this is a spoiled audience of CG professionals; but that was our target group).

Regards,

-Ton-
