There are four main concept in creating a 3D work modeling, materials, lighting, animation. You might not use animation if you are doing a still piece but it still can help in setting up the scene you want to render. For modelling you can use either three things that are types of techniques. mesh (polygonal) modeling, NURBS surfaces, or subdivision modelling using the catmull-clark method. Secondly, there is materials. There are two types that people can use, procdural and/or texturing, or a combination of bothe. Thirdly there are lighting which will illimunate the scene. There are many types of lights like spotlights point lights area lights and lights that emminate from meshes. Also there is animation which helps create motion in the scene over a period of time.
