Bart,
One feed containing both news and announcements should be fine. Less 
confusing & less of a bandwidth load for the site [most users would just 
subscribe to both of them]. How you've set up the feed using the 
<category> tag to describe either a news item or announcement is enough 
to distinguish the posts.

I guess it should also depend on how often and how many posts you think 
will be authored on the blender3d.org site [ie: a site like /. or a 
popular news site adds value by offering it's users separate feeds for 
each category because there is so much content posted daily, and 
separate category feeds allow users to filter out posts they have no 
interest in]. At the current rate of posts on the blender site I think 
you're fine with only one feed.
