I think that the issue with making educational materials is not what
hotkey to press, but where to find the proper command. For every action
their must be a menu item somewhere Its difficult to find things among
the different menus as they are. One of the biggest barriers to new
users is the fact that there isn't a menu bar like in most graphic
programs where the user can browse through all the available
actions/commands. Every action should have a place in easy to navigate
menus.(Perhaps another removable window?- would be a little clunky)

As for the hotkeys, the default layout should be pruned to the most
common actions. The goal is not to make every key used up so that
things are 'faster'. If that were the case, when new features get
added in future releases, the default hotkey setups would have to get
sub menus and multiple choices. This is something that should be
possible to do, but not the out of the box default. And of course
there should be hotkey themes for the way things are now, for those
who prefer the way things are.

It would be nice if hotkeys could get exported to a text file, so you
can take them with you if you change workstations.

It is more important that the thousands of people who download blender
for the first time not be overwhelmed by fragmented menus and obscure
hotkey assignments. Seasoned users can go into preferances and set the
them back to 2.49 or legacy or whatever with a few mouseclicks.
