thanks for info - basically i was thinking whether some other numpy 
(like) array libraries have similar features, giving an array with only 
certain members based on some filtering etc., whether perhaps the numpy 
array interface even has some support for that in itself. i don't know 
if anything such exists or whether this is a new technique. if there is 
a common practice already somewhere, might make sense to use it.
