ok, here's my mockup.  first, i think pastels really help reduce distraction as opposed to bright colors.
from left to right, my favorites are 1, 4, and 5.  i think keeping color directly off the widgets will help in readability and help avoid having to adjust text color.
my absolute favorite is #5--i think it is least distracting and very communicative...as far as functionality the "badges" could just be visual aide and you 
wouldn't *have* to right-click on them to bring up the keyframe menu, but could click on the button as well.

Such features can be part of "Style" definitions, so it can be added 
where appropriate.

Further there's plenty of subtle ways to explore; here's a quicky I

Still; a problem with color coding remains that you have drop (part of) 
the freedom to assign colors to visualize widget types. Color encoding 
is very limited and with more than just a few colors it starts looking 
messy and loses meaning.
