[Bf-python] python documentation examples frequently broken

apparently many of the python documentation examples are broken.  I
recommend the following action

1) take this week and test and fix all examples in the docs
2) post a 2.42a version of the docs to replace the 2.42 docs that
includes the updated examples
3) add the python doc examples as part of the official release test
suite and checklist
