[Bf-modeling] Improving the mirror modifier

So, I started looking into the idea of using another object as a mirror 
object, and one of the first things I found, in the Blender Manual (cf. 
<http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Modifiers/Generate/Mirror>) 
was this definition of a mirror object:

> ... another object (usually an empty), to be used as the reference for 
> the mirror process: its center and axes will drive the *plane*(s) of 
> symmetry. ... [emphasis added]
I'm wondering about proposing to add to the mirror modifier 
functionality which would allow an *axis* of symmetry
