@Jonathan, did assume you're asking about this working in object mode?
(as well as edit-mode)

Well I didn't try, so not certain...
but I'm not all that optimistic about this working in object mode too,
the issue there is that it has to work in many more situations, so
needs to be done more carefully and has higher chance of breaking
other draw options.
Id rather get this trunk-ready editmode-only to begin with.
