The plan was to put out an annoucement to the bf-webcontent list to see if there was someone else willing to take over the responsibilities. Unfortunately that hasn't happened yet, and has largely been my fault - doh! vizzy (verblendet on irc) has extended an offer to help. It would probably be good to have additional individuals so that we don't have a single person bottleneck. Also to avoid burnout from one person doing all the unfun stuff :) Personally I'd like to move as much content as is reasonable from the website CMS side of things to the wiki side of things - in my mind it would be a good idea to move all of the developer documentation, all of the tutorial links, and the script links section over to the wiki. As to the main website I'm sure that there are changes and requests that Ton would like done as well. If you are interested in helping out I would appreciate you emailing a brief description of your background and experience to me. All decisions ultimately Tons to make. This might be discussed at this Sundays meeting, I'll try and confirm for certain by Saturday afternoon. Thanks! -------------------------------------------------------------------- Elephants Dream, world premiere of first 3D 'Open Movie' in Amsterdam Friday March 24, 2006 Today the 3D animated short movie "Elephants Dream" has been premiered in cinema Ketelhuis in Amsterdam. This ten minute short tells the story of Emo and Proog, two people with different visions on the surreal world they live in. The voice acting by Dutch renowned movie actors Tygo Gernandt and Cas Jansen, has inspired the team of animators to bring two exceptional characters to life. On music by German composer Jan Morgenstern, the viewer is taken on a journey through strange and desolate landscapes consisting of machine parts and robotic birds. This project - nicked 'Orange' - has been initiated by the Blender Foundation, with as main target to bring together a group of talented artists to validate, test and help improving the Open Source Blender 3D suite. Six people have been selected to come over to Amsterdam, and work for seven months in the Netherlands Media Art Institute to execute the project. Assisted by Blender's online developers community the roadmap for the software has gained focus especially in the area of character animation tools and the entire rendering and compositing pipeline for film production. Results of this development will be part of the upcoming Blender 2.42 release in May. The target to only use Open Source for the creation of a theatre quality movie also meant a strong involvement of other projects, such as Gimp for painting, Python for scripting and render-farm control, and Subversion for the studio database and version management. Not only will the movie be published under the Creative Commons license, the entire studio database will be published under the Creative Commons as well - ranging from 3d models and texture maps up to all data to recreate the movie entirely. It is especially that aspect that will make the project a true Open Movie, and first in its kind to be released. The dual DVD set with the movie in PAL, NTSC and HD, a making-of documentary, and all the studio files is expected to be shipping half april 2006. Shortly after, the movie and database will be made available for public download as well. Studio Orange team: Director: Bassam Kurdali (Syria /USA), Art Director: Andreas Goralczyk (Germany) Lead Artists: Matt Ebb (Australia), Bastian Salmela (Finland), Lee Cocks (Australia) Technical Director: Toni Alatalo (Finland) The team will present their work saturday/sunday March 25/26 in The Netherlands Media Art Institute, Keizersgracht 264. Here the movie will be shown daily between 13.00 and 18.00 during the two weeks after. Since being 'open source' is the 'hook' it should be in the first paragraph. Also added source to the title (Open is ambiguous, but open source is a buzzword that the press recognizies and is 'interested in'). I changed the tense a bit, and recommend putting the release out in advance (the 'day of' seems a bit odd - probably the 23rd or 22nd would be better...) ********************** Elephants Dream, world premiere of the first 3D 'Open Source Movie' Contact: Ton Roosendal Director Blender Foundation Blender Foundation Phone: Fax: Email: ton at blender.org Mar. 22, 2005 For Immediate Release Elephants Dream, world premiere of the first 3D 'Open Source' Movie (Blender Foundation, Amsterdam, Netherlands) - The 3D animated short 'Elephants Dream' will premiere at cinema Kethelhuis in Amsterdam Friday March 24th. A quote is OK to leave out, is a bit cheesy usually anyway! :) Some notes though; - I still prefer using the definition "Open Movie". It's not an open source movie... that sounds too much like software-only, whilst freeing up the creative data itself is at least as important. We also have 'Open Movie' in our title sequence, and it is in all PR we did for the press until now. - The text takes the emphasis a little bit away from Blender. Improving Blender remains the first target & goal of 'Orange', we didnt get much contributions or support from other projects, other than that we used their products. I don't mind to mellow the press release to have it in a broader context (validating open source for movies in general), but that was not what Orange was about. - the Gnu Image Manipuation Program (GIMP)... do the gimpers really want that name to be spelled entirely? :) Let me make version... mailing it soon! -Ton- On 22 Mar, 2006, at 20:01, Roland Hess wrote: > I liked Tom's restructuring, and did a little of my own to his edits... > > One additional thing that I think would add to it: 'twould be nice to > include a quote in the paragraph that begins "The short film is unique > in its exclusive use" from someone on the Orange team about how an > open resource like this will help along fledgling animators, cure > spina bifada, etc. Probably shouldn't be Ton, though, as he's the > contact. > > ********************** > Elephants Dream, world premiere of the first 3D 'Open Source Movie' > > Contact: > Ton Roosendal > Director, Blender Foundation > Phone: > Fax: > Email: ton at blender.org > > Mar. 22, 2005 > For Immediate Release > > Elephants Dream, world premiere of the first 3D 'Open Source' Movie > > (Blender Foundation, Amsterdam, Netherlands) - The 3D animated short > 'Elephants Dream' will premiere at cinema Kethelhuis in Amsterdam on > Friday, March 24th.
