[Bf-interface] UI Meeting Notes 2017-11-22

Hey, there.

I was wondering if you could clarify what about, or why, the "Info Editor
as a pseudo-top bar" isn't viable.

A lot of people are already hashing out the details of what buttons should
go where, icon sizes, and color choices, so that's not my concern, right
now. But, I do worry quite a lot about the idea of having this "God-bar"
lording over all the editors and not being "a part of Blender" in the way
that the Info Editor is. It's still on an equal functional and conceptual
level with the other parts of Blender.

So, I'm just curious why that aspect of the status quo won't work.
Because, I've
been able to address all of the issues that have been brought up, so far,
conceptually in my head using a revamped Info Editor. But, I'm not on the
UI team, so I'm not sure if there are some specific issues that I (or
others) haven't considered that may render that solution ("top bar" as an
editor) wildly impractical and unhelpful.

Again, I don't care about button placement or fine details (as I believe
that's being competently handled and will continue to be so by very smart
people who know what they're doing), but I do care about the larger
conceptual implications, going forward, as those will radically impact,
decide, and define how we interact and view (idividual perspective, not
visual) Blender as a tool and as a piece of software.

Thanks again for all your hard work, guys!

Hey all,

Here are the notes from today's 16:00 UTC UI-meeting in
irc.freenode.net #blender-ui.
Sorry for sending them so late, had other stuff to deal with first.

== Top-bar ==

* We generally agree that for 2.80, the current solution with the info
editor as "pseudo top-bar" is not really acceptable.
* There are still concerns about the top-bar though, especially
regarding the plan of moving operator redo settings into it (currently
in the tool-shelf).
* Main concern is that there are too many open issues to work on.
* Julian Eisel keeps insisting that this is not the case and that the
top-bar can be made ready with just a few more days of work. Pressure
is on him to prove that!
* He's going to provide test-builds and seek for more user feedback.

== Other Topics ===

* Julian will try to direct the Amber asset engine design development
a bit, trying to help making it a user centered and successful
process.

* Troy Sobotka reminds that colors of the Blender UI are pretty much
broken on many modern displays, esp. Apple ones. Color managing of UI
elements will be needed to solve this.
* Current RGB curves show a good example of what's broken:
https://wiki.blender.org/index.php/User:Sobotka/Color_Management/Bent_Curves
.

* Having interactive VR support is still on the radar. Julian visited
the OpenHMD team two weeks ago, a followup document is on its way.

* A few weeks ago we agreed on having a document on UI targets for
2.8. This was done but caused some discussion amongst developers.
Status: uncertain.

That's it, thanks!
