Yes, a custom approach like you propose would also work and not alter current functionality....


Anything to get that rapid fire input would be helpful even if calling it up or dismissing it took extra clicks.  It's rapid succession of numerical input and seeing results that is the key to the worflow of experimenting or refining numbers.


The thought had also crossed my mind using a custom UI widget for this and similar things.

Imho, an 'evaluate current expression' key would be much more powerful 
and overall, less disruptive. E.g. 'ctrl-Enter' would evaluate current 
text, but without leaving edit mode.

Would have to look at the code, but I hope such change would be easy to 
implement, and it would not change any other behavior of numbuttons.
