Hello everybody,

I have reported this as a bug before. But it got declined. So i try it
here now. In hope that it doesn`t sink here too. Because it is in fact a
showstopper bug that really needs a fix.

It`s about the hotkeys, the names in the User Preferences/ Input Panel,
and the toolnames in the workspace. They differ. Which makes it in more
than one case impossible to find the tool in the Input list because it
has a completely different name than in the workspace. Means you cannot
change the hotkey for this tool from the Input panel.

Open up Blender, open up User Preferences, and enter the Input 3D View
section. Now compare.

Example for category inconsistencies:

Object mode is easy to find, it is also named Object Mode in the User
preferences. Same goes for Weight paint and Vertex paint. At vertex
paint the things already starts to become a bit complicated. There is
also a Weigth Paint Vertex Selection menu item in the User preferences.
Edit mode is very hard to find, because it is called Mesh in the User
Preferences. And i have yet to find the Texture Paint category.

Example for different button names:

There is a button called " History... " in the toolshelf left. When you
enter the search term " History... " in the search field of the Input
panel in the User Preferences , then Blender doesn`t find anything when
you search. Why? That`s how the tool is labeled at its button. When you
enter the search term " History ", then Blender comes up with four
different results, which all COULD be the tool that you search for. But
you cannot be sure, because none of them is really called " History... "

Another example:

We have a button Mark seam, and we have a button Clear seam. When you
search for Clear seam then you find nothing. When you search for Mark
Seam then you find two results. Obviously one of it is Clear seam then,
with negated settings for Mark seam. But how should a user know that?

There are lots more items that has this name inconsistencies. But this
three cases should show what the problem is.

In Short. The names of the tools and categories in the User Preferences
should be the same as in the Workspace. I have also the feeling that
there are much more categories in the shortcut list than necessary.
Which leads to an even bigger confusion. Happy searching ...

The Shortkey Manager lacks of other functionality too. Like no warning
when you use the same hotkey twice. Which needs a fix since years. But
for now it`s about the names of the tools and the categories. They
should be the same everywhere when the same tool is meant.

Kind regards

Tiles
