Speaking only for myself, I don't find the character in and of itself visually
confusing at all... the example you give certainly requires a tracking
adjustment (more space on either side of the pipe), but it's definitely more
clear than just increased spacing between the elements in the case of the modal
key reference... and much, much better than the current situation.

No doubts that the subdued dividers in your mockup are the nicest solution, but
I think the pipes are a perfectly fine and functional placeholder until someone
codes your dividers (in a general sense, so they can be used elsewhere as well).
