The short answer is this: The VSE (and most NLEs) are designed to play back in
real time, all the time (or as close to all the time as possible). Compositors
are not (and, in general, can not).

I mean, you *can* edit in After Effects or Nuke, but there's a reason most
editors (the people, not the software) don't.
