Some private discussion with Harley about multi-column layouts for the
editor-type selector led to some tweaking, and this result based on the
pattern in the Modifier multi-column menu...

Thoughts?

...it feels pretty good so far. While it technically moves the 3d-view
button further from the panel-button, it makes the other three primary
editors much easier to find despite always showing in the same orientation.
(instead of flipping like the old one).
