+1 for addressing this issue.
Actually not only saving, but the whole texture creation/management
needs a lot of improvement, everywhere.
But now we are talking about the saving issue in particular, even
though I've developed the habit to create a new texture > save to an
actual file> save all changes frequently while painting, with a
shortcut (thanks to "Texture Paint Plus") I still loss work from time
to time. And I would really love to forget the saving steps in the
workflow so I can focus all my attention in the texture work itself.
So, following what Alberto already mentioned, I think the key could be
to focus on and improve the Packing system:
- New created/unsaved textures, should be automatically saved into a
"pre-pack" /temp folder. Which would be packed when saving or closing
Blender.
- Texture saving itself, should feature an optional autosave (after
each stroke/change or "user input" time) and ALT+S to manually save to
that "prepack" /temp folder.
- When opening a .blend, Blender could unpack a copy of all the files
to the /temp folder*, and repack all textures when closing or saving,
giving the option somewhere to save changes
*This way we can even edit packed textures externally from that /temp folder.
- As for external/non packed textures, if a user wants to modify a
texture just for that blend, it should be as simple as packing it
ONCE.
P.S.: for any interested developer: how much time/money would it take
to implement something like this?
