For what it's worth, I would prefer the ability to interactively move
toolbar items around and add/delete them as appropriate, though of
course with a default setup.
I agree icons are helpful when you know, but please have the option of
icon+text for those who need the reminder.
Using the escape key to return from a special mode (e.g. box) to a
generic mode (e.g. select) is good IMO.
Finally, I actually hate the Ps way of loading buttons, because it means
you can't just click on something - you have to click and hold in a very
small area until you get a menu then carefully move to select what you
want: fiddly and time consuming.
Having the mode-ish tool buttons all in one place is a nice thing, and
having an info area that reports on what you're doing - e.g. the
length/angle of the current thing - is also good. Being able to manually
edit such values is great too - so I can change the length of a line, or
the angle at a point, by changing a value.
