Thanks for your answers. I guess that not having Blender in daily use here gives 
me withdrawal symptoms.
I down loaded  VirtualBox but it has errors in the rpm and won't unpack.
I will get vmware but it seems to have problems in FC8 and will require several 
hours of messing around.

Mean while the problem remains until help arrives.
