Even the colour issue is not so simple as we have a zillion different
material parameters that the user may want to change in order to get a
certain look. It's not just about red/black/brown hair or
brown/beige/green grass.

Possibly, but as an example.
Grass or hair on a terrain could start as simply as select the verts group on
which to apply and click. A dialog requests input on the 5 parameters if the
defaults are inappropriate and grass/hair appears.
Tweaking is the artist's perogative but the initial application becomes a couple
of simple steps. Golly I've been fiddling with the processes in 2.45 for days
and still haven't got a grip on it, alI want is short grass, green, in patches
on sand.
I haven't achieved reasonable hair at all and haven't found a tut on all the
variables in the particles system for 2.45.
I did read a comment advising not to use 2.45 for hair but go to 2.46RC which
doesn't work on my machine, I get an error "Cant executer binary" which tells me
nothing so 2.45 it is for now.
