Most patches have (or should have!) an attached .blend that
demonstrates or tests the patch.
Patches in the tracker have an ID number you can use to refer
to a specific patch so we know which one you are talking about.

Patches are in diff -u format and applied with the patch
utility. Either google or man is your friend here.
example: patch -p0 < the-patch.txt
