ctrl-shift-mousewheel? sounds strange :D
but another idea behind my idea is that the user actually doesn't have to
use the keyboard. just use his mouse. (e.g. if he sits in front of his pc
with a hot cup of tea and wants to browse through his 3d scene, he only
needs one hand for this, and still can drink his tea)

what view transformations? and, i only want it to be dependent of *mouse*
position, not of cursor position. repositioning the cursor is one extra
click again, and that slows down, for my concerns at least. (like you said
in your next paragraph)

view angel doesn't change, with zooming and panning, right? but location
does, that's true.
