Nope the = is done automatically. there should be no limit on the number 
of selections you can put in the equation, the simplest would be 
pressing shift and adding two together.  "group1 - shift - group2" 
what's shown on the screen after doing that is the result of the opperation.

A current selection temporary buffer could be made so the current 
selection could be put into the equation independantly of any saved 
groups, or needing to save it.

If you want to save that selection you just click on a blank group. and 
it saves either the equation, or the selection as a new group.

Yep both of those. and anything else people can think of.... even other 
modifiers like "random-with % slider" and faces within a certain angle 
to a selection.....  i.e. choose a single face, put in the equation 
editor "angle" and choose 10degrees.  all faces within 10 degrees would 
be selected.  this equation could be saved as a group, and would be 
automatically updates as the mesh was edited, and faces were/weren't 
within 10 degrees any longer.

I see that it could be fairly powerful

Inverse is another important one... i.e. "select-swap" as it is 
currently called in the interface.
