[Bf-funboard] On the subject of object IDs and renderpasses

On the contrary, I'd say the way that it works there in Max is more
of a crappy workaround for their lack of render layers, as we have
them. We have a fully fledged node based compositor where we can
apply effects to different pieces of imagery with great flexibility,
all they have is a totally non-visual system of mapping a number to a
set of pixels, and the interaction is limited to that. yuck.

For doing things that are part of the final result that you're going
to plan in advance, it's much, much better to use render layers.
Unlike Object ID channels, render layers are *anti-aliased*, and will
also provide extra pixels that would otherwise be occluded, which can
be useful for all sorts of things like blur and glow. In this context
(i.e. not as a workaround for lack of renderlayers), the main benefit
as I can see (and as I have used in the past) for the object ID
channel is just to have it there just in case you want to make crude,
small modifications later without having to re-render the entire thing.
