[Bf-funboard] Post sub surf uv mapping?

Is it feasible to apply sub surf settings (edge, at render, 3dview
levels etc.) to an object before unwrapping it in the uv map screen?
So that it's the final shape once you unwrap it, instead of the
original blocky control mesh? Is it possible to place the original
control mesh's vertices with it? And the "optimal" version (the new
optimal from cvs)?
This would be a great feature because it's quite a pain to convert a
sub surfed object to a standard mesh.
Also how about creating images of size X by Y with the unwrapped mesh
sized X by Y inside it, with an alpha channel so we can paint
over/under it? (saveble png/targa)
