Well, I think you replaced one problem with another one.
Now the active tab doesn't look like it belongs to the panel. 
I consider this to be much worse than the previous font colour 
switching.

How about using black for the labels without special background 
for active / un-tabbed, only using darker gray for inactive 
tabs?
